How To Take Care Of Your Roof

August 23, 2016

How should you go about maintaining your roof? Start with a simple checklist and stick to it every year. Here are some tips on what you will need to do to keep your roof in good shape and save money on expensive repairs.

Checklist item #1:  Inspect the outside of the roof regularly.
If you inspect your roof regularly, you’ll be able to spot any missing or cracked shingles, curling, tears or any other issues that could pose a problem once the cold and wet weather returns.

Checklist item #2: Clean the roof often.
It’s important to clean the top of your roof on a regular basis. Throughout the year, debris and dirt can build up and if it’s not taken care of, moss can accumulate which can cause significant damage if it stays there for a long time.

Checklist item #3: Pay attention to the gutters.
If your gutters aren’t kept clear, water can build up and cause damage to your roof, simply because the water can get trapped underneath the shingles. This could cause interior damage, which can be expensive and difficult to repair. So, be sure to have your gutters cleaned before autumn begins and throughout the fall and winter months, be sure to keep them cleaned out so twigs, leaves, and other debris doesn’t block the drain flow.

Checklist item #4: Look inside.
The ceiling interior of your home will tell you if there is a roof problem, so be sure to keep an eye out for any moisture marks or discoloration that looks out of the norm. If there is a leak, there can be soft spots or brown, yellow, or gray discoloration on the inside of your home. If you notice this, you will need to seek help from a professional roofing company. If you wait, things could get worse and this could translate to expensive repairs.

Your roof is a crucial part of your home and keeping it intact and maintained well is part of being a responsible homeowner. Keep your checklist handy and get ready for the fall weather!
